The Technology
Nisien is a Welsh technology company developing HERO, an AI-driven early-warning platform for detecting, classifying and prioritising online threats. The platform can identify text and imagery generated or manipulated using AI, alongside misinformation, abuse and related threats, helping organisations distinguish meaningful risk from the large volumes of noise generated by conventional monitoring approaches. Identified threats are placed into evidence-backed workflows designed to support prioritised action. The technology originates from more than a decade of academic and applied research associated with Cardiff University and is already being commercialised across sport and brand protection alongside its planned national-security application.

The Operational Challenge
The important question in a fast-moving information environment is often not whether something has been said online, but whether it is real and whether it is about to matter. Generative AI makes it increasingly easy to create convincing text and imagery that can misrepresent events, spread misinformation or influence operational decision-making. Keyword alerts and conventional social-listening systems can identify enormous volumes of content while leaving analysts to determine which activity represents a genuine threat and whether action is required. Nisien is seeking to move that process forward in time, providing continuous detection, warning and prioritisation before an emerging issue becomes a larger operational problem.

Why It Matters
The national-security opportunity sits within a much larger shift in the threat environment. AI-generated and manipulated content can target institutions, personnel, military operations and public confidence, creating a growing requirement to identify deceptive content quickly and establish what can be trusted. Nisien also brings evidence of an existing commercial model into Meridian, including a multi-year recurring contract. Its own defence-market modelling identifies applications including AI-modified document scanning and content verification, illustrating how the underlying technology could extend beyond social monitoring into wider information-assurance requirements.
