The Technology

Marlin Intelligence is developing a biomimetic soft-robotic uncrewed underwater vehicle for surveillance and sensing in shallow and contested littoral environments. Rather than using a conventional rigid hull and exposed propeller system, the platform uses an elastomeric body and biomimetic actuation, with the objective of reducing its visual and acoustic signature. It is designed for autonomous or remotely controlled operation, deployment individually or in swarms, and a configurable payload carrying sensors like sonar, optical cameras and hydrophones. Target applications include naval ISR, mine detection and neutralisation, harbour surveillance, submarine tracking and subsea infrastructure monitoring. Marlin Intelligence is at an early stage of product development and is also a member of the Oracle Defense Ecosystem.

The Operational Challenge

Some of the most strategically important maritime environments are also among the hardest to monitor. Ports, harbours, coastlines and shallow waters are cluttered, acoustically complex and frequently contain infrastructure or military assets that require protection. Large underwater vehicles are primarily designed for open-water missions and can be poorly suited to these environments. Conventional smaller UUVs can be visually or acoustically detectable, while human divers introduce risk and cannot provide persistent coverage at scale. Marlin Intelligence is specifically targeting this littoral surveillance gap with a smaller, lower-signature platform designed to operate close to the assets or areas being monitored.

Why It Matters

The opportunity is being expanded by two parallel defence requirements. Naval forces are increasing their use of uncrewed and autonomous systems, while the protection of ports, naval facilities, cables, pipelines and other subsea infrastructure has become a more prominent national-security priority. These requirements create demand not simply for larger autonomous submarines, but for affordable sensing systems that can be deployed in numbers and operate persistently in complex coastal environments. Marlin Intelligence's planned ability to change payloads and deploy from aerial drones, surface or submerged motherships broadens the potential application across surveillance, infrastructure protection, mine countermeasures and submarine tracking.
